I.
INTRODUCTION
A. Song of Solomon is an 8 chapter
love song. It was written before King
Solomon's decline. Solomon wrote 1005
songs (1 Kings 4:32).
B. The first tells of the Shulamite
maiden falling in love with a young shepherd whom she knows nothing about. They
fall deeply in love, yet she still knows nothing about him, she doesn't even
know where he takes his flock to graze. Finally he tells her that he has to
return home, but he will return for her. When he does return she finds out that
the young shepherd is also the king! He takes her away from the life of a
peasant and into the life of royalty.
II.
The Three main characters of the book
A.
King Solomon: He represents the
triumphant, resurrected Jesus Christ who is King of kings.
B. Shulamite maiden: She represents the
Bride of Christ. She is introduced as a young maiden who grows up to become a
Bride in mature partnership with King Jesus.
C. Daughters of Jerusalem: They
represent spiritually immature, believers. They look to the Shulamite for
answers on how to grow close to the King.

PRIMARY SECTIONS IN THE SONG OF SONGS 1-4 AND 5-8
A. The first 4 chapters emphasizes the
Bride's inheritance in Jesus. It talks
about how we can enjoy Jesus and what we receive from Him. It also helps us understand what we have in
Him and how God views us. The main
revelation of these 4 chapters is God's desire for us even in our
weakness. It shows that God doesn't
begin to enjoy us after we mature but that He enjoys/ delights in us while we
are maturing.
B. The second half of the Songs
emphasizes Jesus' inheritance in us. This change in emphasis, happens in SOS
4:16. In the first half of the book, He
is giving us His heart and He gave us His life.
In chapters 5-8, we give ourselves back to him because we are
overwhelmed with the love of God.

4
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SONGS
A.
We seek to love God because He loves
us with all of His heart, soul, mind, and strength.
"We love Him because He first loved us." 1John 4:19
"....
And you shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with
all your strength. This is the
first commandment. And the second, like it is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31
B. The
Song reveals the emotional side of Jesus'.
It shows the why behind the what. Why we
were created and why did Jesus go to the cross for us.
C. 4
Truths that are within these characteristics
1.
The
revelation of Jesus' affections and enjoyment of His people
2.
The
revelation of the beauty of Jesus, especially as Bridegoom King. (Ps. 27:4)
3.
The
revelation of the individual believer to Jesus, even in our weakness.
4.
The
call to grow in love and mature partnership with Jesus.
V.
THREE-FOLD
INHERITANCE
A. There is a 3-fold inheritance that is
described by King David in Psalm 2 and its shown in the Songs. It is a mature Bride that
trembles, rejoices and kisses the Son.
"Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of
the earth for Your
possession...,Be wise, O kings...Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son...." Psalm 2:8-12
and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son...." Psalm 2:8-12
B. David
shows us 3 sides of redemption
1.
Trembling- we see the majesty of Jesus and it
causes us to have the fear of the Lord.
2.
Rejoicing - we rejoice in who we are in Christ for
who He is and what He's done for us.
3.
Kissing - We love Jesus with our heart, soul,
mind and strength.
